I wrote those thirty-one odd letters just to talk to you. You read them and you wrote back to me just for something to do. When the winds come blowing down our front door and it comes unglued, May I find the strength in my legs to stand up and reach for you? Reach for you. I cut down pines and gathered blisters just to stoke the flame. I fought your viruses and troubles just to keep you the same. When the rains come crashing through the windows and paint the floor blue. May I find the strength in my legs to stand up and reach for you? Reach for you. As the gods shake pictures from the table May I still reach for you? And as the gods tear down our initialed maple May I still reach for you? Reach for you. When the winds come blowing down our front door and it comes unglued, May I find the strength in my legs to stand up and reach for you? Reach for you.

When the winter hides, And the grass sways in company. Let the sun rub my shoulder, Warming me up so simply. Oh let me be your son. Let me be your daughter. Pull me into you. Oh it all fits together just right Like clockwork in green and blue. We are only gears In a Swiss watch with perfect time. When our grooves align, The world ticks and the summer shines. Oh let me be your son. Let me be your daughter. Pull me into you. Oh it all fits together just right Like clockwork in green and blue. That we can breathe at all… Oh, let me be your son (that we can breathe at all…). Let me be your daughter. Pull me into you. Oh, it all fits together just right (that we can breathe at all…) Like clockwork in green and blue.

As their cigarettes burn them from end to end, May I light you up, baby, and drag you in? There is a flame licking your cheek, Setting a cardinal free. Flapping its wings, all I can see. “Oh, won't you perch on me?” As the foreman yells, "timber!" and shakes the floor, May I lift you up, baby, forever more? There is a bird building a nest Right atop your chest, Burning so red, flapping its wings. “Oh, is there room for me?"

I fell asleep in the backseat next to you. You shifted your feet onto my knees and I woke anew. The night’s hue felt right. A whisper of light colored us blue. We’d driven through the day. The sun went its way, leaving the moon To pull in on the tide, leaving the beach barren behind. And us asleep on our sleigh, riding a wave into our life. If you’re heading into the sea, Let me follow the bubbles you leave. And if you’re holding your breath all the time, Oh, won’t you borrow a little of mine?

I know there is a tree in your yard That’s seen it all, that’s seen it all before. You ran to climb into its arms To feel tall, with November at your door. Our hair will fall like autumn leaves Onto the grass beneath the schoolchildren’s feet. Our flesh in the soil underneath Will hold the roots and germinate the seeds. I don’t want to live forever. Let me die eventually. Let me die eventually. I don’t want to live forever. Let me die eventually. Let me die eventually. (Our hair will fall like autumn leaves Onto the grass beneath the schoolchildren’s feet. Our flesh in the soil underneath Will hold the roots and germinate the seeds.)

We ran around. The night air and the dew on the ground. Then to your house. Lines and wrinkles made your bed look like a town. We dried our feet and laid our bodies ‘cross the boulevards and streets. Our lips did meet as we tore apart the city underneath. We didn’t need long. We didn’t need long to say what we Needed to say. We rolled around, opened up our hearts, and marched them out our mouths. We let them out to sprout their own white wings and climb up to the clouds. We watched them rise. As they disappeared the sun filled up our eyes. All bright and blind, "Oh, hold me close until the clock decides my time." We didn’t need long. We didn’t need long to say what we Needed to say.

I planted a seed. It’s sprouting in our yard. Green and rising up so very far. Oh, climb up in it. Catch the perfect view. Its limbs are a city. Walk on down the street. Hold the hands of the people you will meet. Let them embrace you. Let the leaves warm you up. The sooner they die, the sooner they will know Where they’re really headed, where they really go. A home in a hollow. A window to the world. A bed with a pillow and my favorite girl. Pull the fruit down. Take just what you need. It grew here for you. You watered it for years. With your body, your love, and your tears. Breathe it in now. Let it lift you up. The sooner we look, the sooner we will know What we’re really doing, what it takes to grow. Oh I belong to something bigger Than just myself. Oh I believe it can teach me better Than I can teach myself. I planted a seed. It’s sprouting in our yard.
